The Imperial Hotel Torquay Review: Historic English Riviera Hotel with Spectacular Bay Views (2025)

Perched above Torquay's sparkling bay, The Imperial Hotel stands as a testament to the English Riviera's Victorian grandeur. During our winter stay at this four-star establishment, we discovered a hotel that perfectly balances its historic charm with modern amenities, though not without a few creaky floorboards along the way.

First Impressions and Location

The Imperial Hotel's exterior might initially raise eyebrows - the facade could benefit from refreshment, and the flags have seen better days. However, step through the doors, and you'll find yourself transported into a world of unexpected grandeur. The reception area showcases the hotel's true character, with impressive Christmas decorations (during our November visit) creating a festive atmosphere that perfectly complements the classical architecture.

Rooms with a View

Our room, while traditionally styled, offered what must be one of Torquay's finest views. Floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto a private balcony overlooking the bay, where sailing boats dot the water against a backdrop of Devon's coastline. The super-king bed (though do let us know in the comments if you think it's just king-size!) provided ample space, though the notorious creaky floorboards did impact our sleep quality.

Dining and Nearby Restaurants

The breakfast service proved to be a highlight of our stay. The friendly staff couldn't do enough to help, and both the full English and vegetarian options exceeded expectations. While we didn't sample the evening menu, the hotel's bar service impressed throughout our stay.

A particular highlight for food lovers: The Elephant Restaurant by Simon Hulstone, a Michelin-starred establishment, sits just a five-minute walk from the hotel. This proximity to fine dining adds another layer of luxury to your stay.
